Dublin – O’Neills – Thank You Mr. Clarke

No one person alone was responsible for the 1916 Easter Rising, but Thomas Clarke did as much as any of the leaders on the Military Council and more than most to bring it about. It is to him that this piece is dedicated and who it honors. The Dublin image of O’Neill’s with Tom Clarke looking over the center of the city pays homage to his role in the 1916 Easter Rising that took place in several locations in and around central Dublin, with this traditional Irish pub bearing witness to it all (even though it was not owned and renamed by MJ O’Neill until 1927).

“I and my fellow signatories believe we have struck the first successful blow for Irish freedom. The next blow, which we have no doubt Ireland will strike, will win through. In this belief, we die happy.” – Thomas Clarke

This is a painting. This one took about 60+ hours to create. Check out the video to see how the layers come together. You can also see how the source photos inform the final painting. The hands on on the clock were deliberately left out. Mr. Clarke looks over us for all time.
